We are transforming our dementia care home pond area into an immersive Journey of Memories for our residents living with dementia.

This will feature a beach area, a bus stop, a sensory pond and sensory garden and a vintage high street.
According to research in dementia care, this design will provide significant benefits:

Reminiscence:

Familiar sights from the past, like a traditional butcher’s or an ice cream van, act as powerful cognitive triggers, helping residents access long term memories and spark meaningful conversations.

Reduced Anxiety and “Sundown” Pacing:

Features like our mock bus stop leverage a concept known as environmental redirection. It provides a safe, comforting, and purposeful destination for residents who feel the urge to walk with purpose or travel, significantly reducing distress and agitation.

Autonomy and Freedom:

The continuous path gives residents a vital sense of independence, allowing them to “explore” the town, visit the beach, or go to the shops in a completely safe, secure environment.

Our aim is to raise a total of £5,000 to complete this project.

If you would like to contribute towards this, please contact Steven Edmunds (General Manager) via enquiries@ecklinggrange.org.uk . Donors will be updated on the progress of the project and invited to the opening.
